I personally think all the classes are good for the most part, though there are some balancing issues with some. I'll let others get into that topic. I would pick something that is close to what you want to do later on in the game. Here is a little break down of the ones I know.

Saint, can become Priest or Shaman.

Saints have healing, buffs, AoEs, and Defensive spell in addition to their reg attack spells.

Priest get more healing and buff spells, it is best to invest in the AoEs and be a Hybrid Priest.

Shamans get more damage and debuff spells.

-----------------------------------------

Explorer, can become Excavator or Sniper.

Explorer is this the range attack class and uses dual pistols and rifle. They get some buff spells but mainly attack spells.

Excavators are the AoE of this group and most builds are geared towards this.

Snipers... I don't know snipers that well.

------------------------------------------

Mercenary, can become Gladiator or Guardian Swordsman.

Mercenary is the fighter class and mainly uses 2H sword or 1H sword with shield. Has passive skills that increase defense and HP.

Gladiator is the damage dealer and normally has a high strength. Uses AoEs as most require the use of the 2H sword.

Guardian Swordsman is the tank and mainly uses the provoke skill to keep the attention of Bosses while others do the damage.

-------------------------------------------

Nobles, can become Court Magician or Magical Knight.

Nobles are the mages/wizards... I know even less about these than I do the sniper class.

Hope this helps, it is very general but should give you an idea. Others please expand on what I wrote.
